Myung-Soo Kang
Myung-Soo Kang has been working on the EBNA1 roles in LCL cell growth in vitro and oncogenensis in transgenic mice model. He has shown that EBNA1 is not the major determinant on LCL cell growth although EBNA1 is required for LCL maintenance, and accordingly it does not induce lymphoma in vivo. Currently he is trying to identify chemical inhibitors that modulate EBNA1 functions from cell-based assay. Following functional secondary assays are underway.

Latent membrane protein (LMP1) is a growth transforming protein of EBV and has been shown to activate NF-kB, c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK), and p38 pathways. LMP1 constitutively aggregates in a discrete patch in the plasma membrane, cholesterol- and sphingolipid- rich microdomain also known as lipid rafts. Lipid rafts have been shown to be important for signaling by CD40, TNFa and many other members of TNF family. LMP1 mimics CD40 signaling but whether lipid rafts are important for LMP1 signaling or not is not clear. LMP1 mediated activation of JNK and p38 pathways is also not very well studied. I am trying to answer the questions: whether lipid rafts are important for LMP1 mediated signaling cascades or not and also trying to look for the important players in the LMP1 mediated JNK and p38 pathways.
